Today I went to Goldsmiths university open day to attend a talk on 'being a secondary school teacher'. The talk was conducted by Ruth Bailey who works at Goldsmiths and the people were there to find out about the PGCE course they offer. It was very eye opening to be told that Drama students are not offered any bussery funds for taking the course whereas students taking a Maths or Science PGCE are entitled to £20,000! This is a prime example of how the government favour these subjects and have no revere for Drama.
Here is the information table provided by the Department for Education. I asked Ruth if Drama came under the 'other priority' section but it doesn't.

wow. That's a bit disheartening!!! Especially that Drama is not even regarded as "other priority subject"!!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like everything I am reading lately is pointing towards performing arts being pushed out of education entirely! It's so frustrating!
How did you get on with Goldsmiths? So it would be £4K at the 2.1... but the other route is the Schools Direct - and the SCITT I have put up more links on the Libguide - not good though in terms of the subject areas... here is is directly again http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/teacher-training-options.aspx
ReplyDeleteUnfortuantely Paula, Dance and Drama is not a priority subject and there is no bursary available. I will still be looking in to the schools direct route. Thank you for the link, I will take a look now. It's very easy to get disheartened Liam, but the visit to Goldsmiths actually motivated me. There are only four unis in London that offer Drama (Middlesex being one) and there are very few places for each pGCE course -even fewer for Schools Direct Salaried, but I feel that i have alot to offer. Everything the Goldsmiths speaker said that they look for in a teacher, are the qualities I have. I think my experience as a teaching assistant in the school I'm currenty in has tainted my outlook on teaching (It is a very difficult school to work in). Having gone to the open day, I feel a whole new desire to go in to teaching. I would really recommend going to an open day if you can Liam.
