Since the government cuts, almost everyone within the arts industry have noticed the effect. Universitys are withdrawing drama GTPs, schools are dropping drama and dance from the national curriculum, grants are being refused and theatres are being closed.
I believe this is a mistake. I think that by only concentrating on academic subjects, children will lose out considerabley. Here are some of the questions I have relating to this topic that I wish to explore as my line of inquiry.
1. Why are subjects like maths and science considered more important than creative subjects?
2. How will removing creative subjects from the curriculum effect the arts industry?
3. Is it fair to impose academic subjects on pupils who a) want a career in performing arts
b) Are not academic but flurish in creative subjects
5. How do creative subjects improve the learning of academic subjects?
I give you my full back-up with this Sarah! I think you should be in Parliament. X
ReplyDeleteThese are some very interesting questions here. This is just my opinion, but a while ago, i bloged about maths and science being highly linked to dance!
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to see why fees for professional artistic schools is so expensive, and if cuts could be made within the school to help reduce the fee so that students are more likely to be able to fund their tuition.
There is a school in America called Harid Conservatory, and it is one of the few schools that the students don't have to pay for tuition. It would be interesting to compare and contrast these types of tuition free schools.
Like the above too about 'fees' ^^
ReplyDeleteJoanna Burford-Adelinka looked at some linked themes in her recent work. Coleen compared the teaching of dance to sports education.
ReplyDelete1. Why are subjects like maths and science considered more important than creative subjects? Look at literature about this topic to find out if there is a debate going on - there is the Robinson report - but there are also more recent sources.
2. How will removing creative subjects from the curriculum effect the arts industry?
with the dada provision under threat - this is one that is being debated for performing schools - but I imagine the musical theatre industry has had something to say - where do your interests lie in the question? What level of performance?
3. Is it fair to impose academic subjects on pupils who a) want a career in performing arts What is fair? what type of specialism and at what level?
b) Are not academic but flurish in creative subjects - is this the idea of vocational subjects - a lot is changing - might be good to be up on all of this - the debates between vocational education and academic ones might be relevant to what you do
5. How do creative subjects improve the learning of academic subjects? Some has been written - Jacob commented - Again - are your interests with mainstream or specialist learning = it might be good to go against character and think about these issues with the counterarguments as a way of thinking about all the issues involved for young people. Identify your age group when you do this.
great ideas here Paula, thank you!
